Sizing Guide
How to Choose the Right Generator Size
Start with what has to run at the same time, then match the generator’s output to your electrical service. The table shows where each model typically fits. Your actual loads decide the final choice.
| Power | Output | Typical applications | Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20–25 kW | OutputSingle-phase 110/220V or 220V | Typical applicationsHomes and small shops: essential circuits or a whole home, depending on loads | Models20 kW Perkins Diesel 25 kW Yangdong Diesel (export only) |
| 30–40 kW | OutputSingle-phase 220V | Typical applicationsLarger homes, farms and small commercial spaces with several motor loads | Models30 kW Cummins Diesel 40 kW Kubota Diesel (built-in ATS) |
| 50 kW gas | OutputSingle-phase 220V or built to order | Typical applicationsCommercial and residential standby where natural gas or LPG is available | Models50 kW Cummins Natural Gas 50 kW Cummins LPG |
| 80–112 kW | OutputThree-phase 480/277V (multi-voltage) | Typical applicationsCommercial buildings, workshops and light industrial sites on three-phase service | Models80 kW Volvo Diesel 112 kW Volvo Diesel |
| 200 kW | OutputThree-phase 480V, selectable voltages | Typical applicationsLarger commercial and industrial facilities and multi-building sites | Models200 kW Volvo Diesel |
Five steps to size a generator
- List your loads. Add up the running watts of everything that must operate at the same time.
- Allow for starting surges. Motors in air conditioners, pumps and compressors briefly draw several times their running current.
- Compare against prime power. Use the prime rating for everyday planning and treat the standby rating as outage headroom.
- Match phase and voltage. Single-phase buildings need a single-phase unit. Three-phase service needs one of the Volvo models.
- Pick a fuel and runtime. Decide between diesel, natural gas and LPG, and how long the unit must run between refuels.
kW, kVA and power factor
Single-phase models in our lineup are rated at a power factor of 1.0, so kW and kVA are the same. The three-phase Volvo units are rated at 0.8 power factor: the 80 kW unit is 100 kVA, the 112 kW is 140 kVA and the 200 kW is 250 kVA.
Send us your load list or utility bills and we can do the math with you.
Fuel Types
Diesel vs. Natural Gas vs. LPG
Diesel
Fuel is stored on site in the generator’s base tank (50–520 liters depending on model).
- Runs independently of gas utilities during storms and outages
- Runtime set by tank size and refueling; stored fuel needs periodic upkeep
- Widest range of sizes, from 20 kW single-phase to 200 kW three-phase
Models
Natural Gas
Fuel comes from the utility gas line, with nothing to store or refill.
- Runtime limited by gas service rather than tank size
- Needs a gas meter and piping sized for the generator (0.8–30 kPa supply for our 50 kW unit)
- A good fit for commercial, multi-family and residential sites that already have gas
Models
LPG (Propane)
Fuel is stored on site in a propane tank and refilled by delivery.
- Works where there is no natural gas service
- Keeps in storage without the fuel upkeep diesel needs
- Tank size determines runtime; plan it with your propane supplier
